(a) Valency of Sodium
The atomic number of sodium is 11, so its electronic configuration is 2, 8, 1.It has 1 electron in its outermost shell. Sodium atom can lose this electron to form a sodium ion, Na*, having an inert gas electron arrangement of 2, 8.Since a sodium atom loses 1 electron to achieve the inert gas electron configuration,therefore, the valency of sodium is 1 (or 1+).The atomic number of potassium is 19 and its valency is also 1. Similarly, the atomic number of lithium is 3 and its valency is also 1. Explain these two cases yourself.
